L'essentiel du cours
Les propositions conditionnelles expriment une dépendance entre une condition (if-clause) et un résultat (main clause).
- Zero Conditional (Vérités générales) : $If + Present Simple, Present Simple$.
- Ex: If you heat ice, it melts.
- First Conditional (Futur probable) : $If + Present Simple, Will + Verb$.
- Ex: If you study hard, you will pass the exam.
- Second Conditional (Hypothèse irréelle au présent) : $If + Past Simple, Would + Verb$.
- Ex: If I were you, I would join the Royal Military Academy.
- Third Conditional (Regret sur le passé) : $If + Past Perfect, Would have + Past Participle$.
- Ex: If he had trained harder, he would have won the competition.
- Mixed Conditional (Mélange passé/présent) : $If + Past Perfect, Would + Verb$.
- Ex: If he had followed the instructions (past), he would be safe now (present).
Méthodes à maîtriser
- Identifier le temps : Regardez si la situation est réelle, imaginaire ou passée.
- Inversion : Vous pouvez commencer par la main clause (pas de virgule) ou la if-clause (virgule nécessaire).
- Le verbe "to be" : Dans le Second Conditional, on utilise toujours were pour toutes les personnes ($If I were, If he were$).
Exemples corrigés
- If I (have) time, I will call you. $\rightarrow$ have (1st conditional).
- If she (know) the truth, she would tell us. $\rightarrow$ knew (2nd conditional).
- If they (not/miss) the bus, they would have arrived on time. $\rightarrow$ had not missed (3rd conditional).
Erreurs fréquentes
- Utiliser would dans la if-clause (ex: If I would go est incorrect).
- Oublier le have dans le 3rd conditional.
- Confondre le Past Simple et le Past Perfect dans les hypothèses.
