📘 Fiche de cours

L'essentiel du cours

Le chapitre « Celebrations » se concentre sur la capacité à décrire des événements festifs, des traditions et des cérémonies.

1. Vocabulary (Le lexique)

  • Types of celebrations: Religious festivals (Eid, Christmas), National holidays (Independence Day), Personal events (Weddings, Birthdays, Anniversaries), Cultural festivals (Carnivals, Parades).
  • Verbs of action: To celebrate, to commemorate (commémorer), to observe (une tradition), to organize, to participate in, to gather (se rassembler), to feast (festoyer).
  • Nouns related to atmosphere: Tradition, custom, ritual, ceremony, parade, decoration, feast, banquet, costume, atmosphere.
  • Adjectives: Joyful, traditional, solemn (solennel), crowded, festive, annual.

2. Grammar (La grammaire)

  • Past Simple vs. Present Perfect:
    • On utilise le Past Simple ($S + V_{ed}$ ou irrégulier) pour une célébration terminée à un moment précis du passé.
      • Example: We celebrated Eid last month.
    • On utilise le Present Perfect ($S + have/has + V_{pp}$) pour parler de traditions qui existent depuis longtemps ou d'expériences sans date précise.
      • Example: People have celebrated this festival for centuries.
  • Relative Clauses (Les propositions relatives): Pour donner des détails sur une fête.
    • Who: pour les personnes (The people who attend the wedding...).
    • Which/That: pour les choses (The parade which takes place in the street...).
    • Where: pour les lieux (The city where the festival is held...).

Méthodes à maîtriser

Décrire une célébration (The 5 W's Method) : Pour réussir une description écrite, réponds toujours à ces questions :

  1. What: Quel est l'événement ? (It is a traditional wedding...)
  2. When: Quand a-t-il lieu ? (It takes place every year in spring...)
  3. Where: Où cela se passe-t-il ? (It is held in the main square...)
  4. Who: Qui participe ? (Families and friends gather...)
  5. Why/How: Pourquoi et comment ? (To commemorate independence / People wear traditional clothes...)

Exemples corrigés

Exemple 1 : Transformer une phrase simple en phrase complexe.

  • Simple: We saw a parade. It was colorful.
  • Complex: We saw a colorful parade which moved through the streets.

Exemple 2 : Choisir le bon temps.

  • Question: I (visit) ________ my family during the last Eid.
  • Réponse: I visited my family during the last Eid. (Indicateur de temps passé : "last Eid").

Erreurs fréquentes

  • Confondre "Celebrate" et "Commemorate" : "Celebrate" est pour la joie (un anniversaire), "Commemorate" est pour le souvenir respectueux (un monument historique).
  • Oublier le "s" à la 3ème personne du singulier au présent : The festival starts in May (et non The festival start).
  • Mauvaise utilisation de "Since" et "For" :
    • $Since + \text{point de départ}$ (Since 2010).
    • $For + \text{durée}$ (For ten years).
