📘 Fiche de cours

L'essentiel du cours

Ce chapitre se concentre sur deux axes principaux : le vocabulaire de la santé et la grammaire pour donner des conseils ou exprimer des conditions.

1. Vocabulaire (Vocabulary)

  • Lifestyle (Mode de vie) : Healthy habits (habitudes saines), unhealthy habits (habitudes malsaines), balanced diet (alimentation équilibrée), physical activity (activité physique), sedentary lifestyle (mode de vie sédentaire).
  • Diseases & Problems (Maladies et problèmes) : Infectious diseases (maladies contagieuses), chronic diseases (maladies chroniques), obesity (obésité), stress, malnutrition, addiction (dépendance).
  • Prevention & Welfare (Prévention et bien-être) : To prevent (prévenir), to cure (guérir), healthcare system (système de santé), well-being (bien-être), medical check-up (bilan médical).

2. Grammaire (Grammar)

  • Modals for Advice (Les modaux pour le conseil) :
    • $Should / Shouldn't + \text{verb (infinitive)}$ : Pour donner un conseil léger.
    • $Ought \ to + \text{verb (infinitive)}$ : Synonyme de should.
    • $Must / Mustn't + \text{verb (infinitive)}$ : Pour une obligation forte ou une interdiction.
  • Conditionals (Les structures avec "If") :
    • Type 1 (Possible/Réel) : $If + \text{Present Simple}, \ \text{will} + \text{infinitive}$.
      • Ex: If you eat too much sugar, you will gain weight.
    • Type 2 (Imaginaire/Hypothétique) : $If + \text{Past Simple}, \ \text{would} + \text{infinitive}$.
      • Ex: If I had more time, I would exercise every day.

Méthodes à maîtriser

  1. Identifier le type de conseil : Si la phrase demande un conseil amical, utilise should. Si elle parle d'une règle médicale stricte, utilise must.
  2. Maîtriser la structure de la condition : Ne jamais mettre "will" ou "would" immédiatement après le "if".
    • $\text{Correct: } If \ I \ study \dots$
    • $\text{Incorrect: } If \ I \ will \ study \dots$
  3. Utiliser les connecteurs de cause et conséquence : Pour expliquer pourquoi une habitude est mauvaise, utilise because, due to, as a result, therefore.

Exemples corrigés

Exemple 1 (Grammaire) : Transforme la phrase suivante en utilisant "If" (Type 1) : Eat vegetables or you will get sick.

  • Corrigé : If you eat vegetables, you won't get sick. (Ou : If you don't eat vegetables, you will get sick.)

Exemple 2 (Vocabulaire) : Complète : To avoid obesity, people should follow a _______ diet.

  • Corrigé : balanced (une alimentation équilibrée).

Erreurs fréquentes

  • L'erreur du "to" après les modaux :
    • $\text{Faux: } You \ should \ to \ sleep \ more.$
    • $\text{Vrai: } You \ should \ sleep \ more.$
  • Confondre "Must" et "Should" :
    • Should est une suggestion. Must est une nécessité absolue.
  • L'erreur de temps dans le "If clause" :
    • $\text{Faux: } If \ it \ will \ rain, \ I \ will \ stay \ home.$
    • $\text{Vrai: } If \ it \ rains, \ I \ will \ stay \ home.$

  1. Identifie la cause (le problème) : If you smoke...
  2. Ajoute la conséquence ou le conseil : ...you will damage your lungs.

Technically, mustn't is stronger than advice; it expresses prohibition.

  1. If you want to say something is a bad idea: Use shouldn't.
  2. If you want to say something is strictly forbidden or very dangerous: Use mustn't. Example: "You shouldn't eat too much sugar" (Advice) vs "You mustn't drive if you are drunk" (Prohibition).

💡 À retenir : Cause $\rightarrow$ Result.

How can I use "If" to talk about a hypothetical situation?

Use the Second Conditional ($If + \text{Past Simple}, \ \text{would} + \text{infinitive}$):

  1. Use this for things that are not true right now or are unlikely.
  2. Example: If I were a doctor, I would help poor people. (But I am not a doctor).
  3. Example: If I had more money, I would buy healthy organic food. (But I don't have much money).

💡 À retenir : $If + \text{Past} \rightarrow \text{would}$ (Imaginaire).

A sedentary lifestyle is a way of living that involves very little physical activity. People with this lifestyle spend most of their time sitting (e.g., office workers, gamers) and do not exercise enough. This can lead to health problems like obesity and heart disease.
