    • $Because \ of / Due \ to / Owing \ to + Noun \ (Group \ nominal)$
  • To express Effect (La conséquence):
    • $So / Therefore / Consequently / As \ a \ result \ (+ \ Clause)$

3. Grammar: Expressing Purpose (Le but)

  • $To / In \ order \ to / So \ as \ to + Verb \ (Infinitive)$
  • $So \ that + Clause \ (Subject + can/could/will/would + Verb)$

Méthodes à maîtriser

1. Décrire un problème social : Pour réussir une rédaction, suivez la structure : Definition $\rightarrow$ Causes $\rightarrow$ Consequences $\rightarrow$ Solutions.

  • Exemple : "Unemployment is a major issue. It is caused by the lack of jobs. As a result, poverty increases."

2. Transformer la cause (Grammar transformation) : Si vous passez de "Because" à "Because of", vous devez transformer la proposition en groupe nominal.

  • Phrase 1 : He is poor because he is unemployed.
  • Phrase 2 : He is poor because of his unemployment.

Exemples corrigés

Exemple 1 : Cause et Conséquence

  • Question : Combine these two sentences using "therefore".
  • Sentences : Many people lack education. They cannot find good jobs.
  • Correction : Many people lack education; therefore, they cannot find good jobs.

Exemple 2 : Le But (Purpose)

  • Question : Rewrite using "so that".
  • Sentence : The government creates jobs to reduce poverty.
  • Correction : The government creates jobs so that they can reduce poverty.

Erreurs fréquentes

  • Confusion Cause/Effet : Utiliser "so" pour donner la cause au lieu de la conséquence.
    • Faux : I am tired so I worked hard.
    • Juste : I am tired because I worked hard.
  • Structure après "Because of" : Mettre un verbe conjugué après "because of".
    • Faux : Because of he was sick...
    • Juste : Because of his sickness... (ou "Because he was sick").

🎯 Society and social Problems

1/4

Many people suffer from ________ because they cannot read or write.

❓ Questions fréquentes

Chno hiya lferq bin "because" o "because of"?

C'est une question très courante. La différence réside dans la grammaire qui suit :

  1. Because est une conjonction. Elle est toujours suivie d'une proposition complète (Sujet + Verbe).
    • Exemple : We are poor because we lack resources.
  2. Because of est une préposition. Elle est toujours suivie d'un groupe nominal (Nom ou Pronom).
    • Exemple : We are poor because of the lack of resources.

💡 À retenir : $Because + Sujet + Verbe$ / $Because \ of + Nom$.

Kifach nktb l'introduction dyal l'essay f had l'module?

Pour une introduction efficace sur un problème social, suivez ces 3 étapes :

  1. Hook (L'accroche) : Présentez le sujet de manière générale (ex: "Nowadays, society faces many challenges...").
  2. Define (Définition) : Donnez une brève définition du problème (ex: "Unemployment means being without a job...").
  3. Thesis Statement (Annonce du plan) : Dites ce que vous allez analyser (ex: "In this essay, I will discuss its causes and effects").

💡 À retenir : Ne commencez jamais directement par vos idées personnelles, partez du général vers le particulier.

Wach n9der nkhdem "so that" m3a l'infinitive?

Non, c'est une erreur classique.

  1. To / In order to / So as to sont suivis de l'infinitif (la base verbale).
    • Exemple : He studies hard to pass his exam.
  2. So that est suivi d'une proposition (Sujet + Verbe, souvent avec un modal comme can, could, will, would).
    • Exemple : He studies hard so that he can pass his exam.

💡 À retenir : $So \ that + Sujet + Modal + Verbe$.

What is the difference between "poverty" and "illiteracy"?

They are two different social problems:

  1. Poverty refers to the lack of money and basic necessities (food, housing, clothes). It is an economic problem.
  2. Illiteracy refers to the inability to read or write. It is an educational problem.

Note that they are often linked: poverty can lead to illiteracy because children cannot afford school.

💡 À retenir : Poverty = Money issue / Illiteracy = Education issue.

How can I express the consequence of a social problem?

You can use several connectors depending on the sentence structure:

  1. Conjunctions (to start a new clause): Use "so".
    • Example: It rained, so the streets became muddy.
  2. Adverbs (to start a new sentence): Use "Therefore", "Consequently", or "As a result".
    • Example: Crime is increasing. Therefore, people feel unsafe.

💡 À retenir : Use "so" in the middle of a sentence and "Therefore" at the beginning of a new one.

Can "due to" be used at the beginning of a sentence?

Yes, "due to" can be used at the beginning of a sentence, just like "because of". It must be followed by a noun phrase.

  • Example: Due to the high unemployment rate, many people suffer from poverty.

However, in very formal English, some teachers prefer "Because of" at the start, but "Due to" is widely accepted in exams.

💡 À retenir : $Due \ to + Noun$ works at the start or in the middle.

What are some solutions to social problems?

When writing about solutions, use verbs like "should", "must", or "can".

  1. Education: "The government should improve schools to fight illiteracy."
  2. Job creation: "Companies can create more jobs to reduce unemployment."
  3. Awareness: "We must raise awareness about drug addiction."

💡 À retenir : Always link a solution to a specific problem.

Is "crime" a social problem?

Yes, crime is a major social problem. It includes illegal activities like theft, violence, or fraud. It affects the safety and stability of a society.

What is the difference between "social inequality" and "discrimination"?

They are related but different:

  1. Social inequality is the unequal distribution of wealth, opportunities, and privileges within a society.
  2. Discrimination is the unfair treatment of a person or group based on characteristics like gender, race, or religion.
What is "child labor"?

Child labor is the exploitation of children through any form of work that deprives them of their childhood, interferes with their ability to attend regular school, and is mentally, physically, or socially harmful.

Can I use "as a result of" instead of "because of"?

Yes, they are almost identical in meaning and usage. Both are followed by a noun phrase.

  • Example 1: He lost his job because of the crisis.
  • Example 2: He lost his job as a result of the crisis.
What is the most important thing to remember for the writing part?

The most important thing is cohesion. Use linking words (connectors) to link your ideas. Without connectors, your paragraph will look like a list of disconnected sentences.
